Contract Description:
The smolt-monitoring program (SMP) provides data on movement of salmonid smolts past the series of dams on the Snake and Columbia rivers. Indices of migration timing are provided for the run-at-large at key monitoring sites. In addition, marked smolts from hatcheries provide measures of smolt speed and in-river survival through key reaches. Fish quality, descaling, and gas bubble trauma measures are taken on samples of fish collected at the monitoring sites to provide an indicator of health of the run.

These data are used for in-season operational discussions relative to flow and spill management, particularly during periods when spill is being provided to improve smolt passage at dams.

Non-Salmonid GBT monitoring will continue in the summer at the Bonneville and McNary monitoring facilities.

I251016157Collect/Generate/Validate Field and Lab DataPSMFC-Bonneville Dam Smolt MonitoringImplement smolt monitoring program (SMP) work plan and start sampling at Hamilton Island Juvenile Monitoring Facility (JMF) at Bonneville Dam March - October. Bonneville Dam-Hamilton Island JMF: The JMF, which samples fish from the second powerhouse, will be the primary sampling site at Bonneville. Fish Passage Indices will be calculated from the samples according to FPC established procedures. The facility is equipped with a 3-way rotating gate used for collecting research fish using the SbyC system and diverting them into one of two tanks. On the center flume, or bypass flume, downstream of the 3-way gate, there is a 2-way gate that collects the timed subsample for smolt monitoring. Two to six subsamples are collected per hour, 24 hours per day and processed first at 0700, and possibly again at midday, depending on conditions and fish numbers. Sample rates are adjusted to collect about 500 fish per day in the spring and 250 fish per day in the fall. Personnel will be on site 24 hours per day to monitor dewatering screens and holding tanks, and fish distribution flumes.$215,32514.22%03/01/202502/28/2026
